It’s funny how scarcity makes us appreciate other cultures and “exotic” goods.

I was roasting cacao today when my weekly banana bread salesman showed up with the customary Tico whistle. I offered him some of my smoothie (bananas, ice, milk, peanut butter, coconut oil, sunflower seed, coconut oil – in case you’re curious) and a roasted cacao bean.

He’d never had a cacao bean although he says that the pods just fall rotting on the ground here. He nibbled on the bean with a twisted bitter face – like a little kid accidentally trying his first hoppy beer – and quickly chased it down with the smoothie while I was giggling. I think he is more used to eating the sweet fruits and sugary chocolate.
